Семья Никлби, никогда не знавшая забот, остается без денег после смерти отца. Николас, его мать и сестра отправляются в Лондон просить помощи у дядюшки Ральфа. Дядюшка находит работу для Николаса и отсылает его преподавать в школу на севере Англии. Здесь Николас будет защищать одного из учеников сироту Смайка от жестокого директора школы.
