One size doesn’t fit all: how to teach English really effectively in mixed ability classes.

Let’s face it - that here is no group of students with identical levels of proficiency, motivation or learning styles. This significant variation among individual learners may sometimes feel as if we were teaching twenty different lessons in a group of twenty students… Clearly, this is a major challenge for every teacher and necessitates all sorts of adaptive teaching methods.

 In this practical session we are going to look at different ways of accommodating such diverse learners’ needs in a way that does not require too much planning or preparation. I am going to present some tried-and-tested teaching strategies and techniques, easy to implement into any lesson, which can create an engaging and effective learning environment for all your students and ensure a sense of progress for everyone.

Smart assessment: how to make your learners truly involved in their learning

 No modern language course – particularly in a public institution - can do without assessment. This does not change the fact that, in light of what we now know about the nature of learning, not every type of assessment is equally sensible and helpful. So, which strategies, forms, and types of assessment should be focus on, and how to integrate them in our daily teaching?

 This is where this very practical session comes in. I’ll offer a range of ideas for how to enrich your repertoire of assessment techniques, task types and tools. I’ll show you how – if used smartly – they can help your learners get a lot more information about the progress they’ve already made, and about the areas that they still need to work on. And, above all, about how you as a great language teacher will help your teenagers get a lot more involved in making the most of this priceless extra information in their learning.
