Working with very young learners who are just about to embark on the journey of learning a language may be extremely rewarding, but it’s not without its challenges. Most students lack knowledge of the English alphabet and possess no elementary reading skills due to the differences from the Ukrainian alphabet. Additionally, given the limited classroom time, some otherwise effective, well-known methods may not work well in a more challenging educational environment.
This session will address these issues by presenting hands-on solutions that can be easily integrated into English lessons. We will talk about:
- using visual and auditory materials to expand vocabulary and practice
communication
- taking a selective approach to using coursebooks, with a focus on reading texts
- developing early writing skills through creative exercises that do not rely on traditional alphabetic knowledge
By the end of the session, each participant will have a toolkit of methods to create engaging and effective English lessons that support the youngest students from the moment they enter the classroom for the first time.
